Applications open for an exciting community art commission!

As part of its complete redevelopment of Llys Awelon Extra Care Housing Scheme in Ruthin, Grŵp Cynefin housing association is looking for a local artist or artists to create a unique piece of art to be enjoyed by the residents, staff, and visitors.

Grŵp Cynefin is putting a call out for artists of all disciplines to apply for the substantial commission, to be fulfilled during the period for, June to November if this year.

Llys Awelon is currently at the latter stages of a complete redevelopment to modernise and extend the existing building to create a high-quality, low-carbon, purpose-built scheme to meet the needs of older people in the Denbighshire area. An additional 35 flats will be added to the existing 21 homes. The scheme is a partnership with Denbighshire County Council with funding from the Welsh Government.

Local company, Read Construction, is the construction company re-developing the site. As part of the social value clause of their contract they, together with Grŵp Cynefin are funding the community art project.

As well as a unique and attractive piece of art, the aim is for the creative process to be a collaborative and inclusive project led by the artist or artists. It will bring together younger and older generations through sessions with current Llys Awelon residents and pupils from Ysgol Pen Barras primary school in Ruthin. An environmental and sustainable element is also encouraged.

“The process of creating a piece of art for Llys Awelon is as important as the final piece itself,” says said Ffion Pittendreigh, Grŵp Cynefin’s Community Initiatives Manager.

“We want the process to be exciting and collaborative, with ideas and involvement from those who’ve made Llys Awelon their home, and local children. Intergenerational activity is always encouraged by Grŵp Cynefin as they are so beneficial to everyone involved. But bringing those generations together to create a piece of art is incredibly exciting. It’s a fantastic commission for an artist, or artists, as we can consider joint applications, and we’re looking forwards to awarding the commission soon.”

More information is available here with a detailed brief, value of the contract and how to apply for the commission. The closing date is Thursday, 29 February 2024 12pm.
