Grŵp Cynefin Encouraging More People to Cycle in the New Year
As thousands make resolutions to be healthier, exercise more, and live more sustainably in 2026, housing association Grŵp Cynefin is also doing its part. A new bike storage facility will ensure that Grŵp Cynefin tenants in Machynlleth can keep their bikes safe, while also encouraging more people to cycle.
This is a positive step as the housing association, which owns over 5,000 properties across north Wales and Powys, seeks to promote health and wellbeing among its tenants and, of course, encourage greener ways of living.
Having a dedicated space to store bikes securely without having to keep them inside the house or flat will be a big help to tenants.
This is just the beginning, with further bike storage facilities planned for other Grŵp Cynefin tenants.
The project has been made possible thanks to funding from Transport for Wales and the Welsh Government, and is part of the group’s commitment to reducing its carbon footprint and supporting the health and wellbeing of communities.
Ffion Pittendreigh, Grŵp Cynefin Community Initiatives Manager, said:
“This is a milestone for us – our first bike storage facility, with more on the way. We’re very proud to offer this facility to tenants in Machynlleth and look forward to expanding this initiative. Cycling is a great way to keep fit and help the environment, and we hope this will make cycling easier and a more attractive choice for people in their everyday lives.”
Nicola Grima, Active Travel Delivery Programme Lead at Transport for Wales, said:
“We’re pleased to work with Grŵp Cynefin, with funding from the Welsh Government, to provide new secure bike storage for homes and community spaces across Wales. Through phase one of our bike hanging programme, we’re installing 40 hanging units across eight different housing associations, with plans for more at railway stations. These practical improvements will make it easier for people to walk, wheel, and cycle, and we’re delighted to bring these benefits to the communities served by Grŵp Cynefin.”
Ronald Olden, one of Grŵp Cynefin’s tenants who’s already using the storage, said:
“I lost some of my sight after a stroke and I can’t drive anymore. This storage means I can keep a bike safe, and it’s a great way to stay fit. Thanks to Grŵp Cynefin, Transport for Wales, and Seiclo Dyfi, who provided my bike, for making this possible.”
