Grŵp Cynefin pledges to a greener future

Grŵp Cynefin has  pledged to reduce carbon emissions by 4% year on year to net zero* by the year 2044.

They announced this on the first day of the Denbighshire Urdd Eisteddfod 2022, with a whole day of ‘green’ activities on their unit on the field.

Today (Monday, May 30) children will be invited to plant vegetables in compostable  pots and to take them home to plant. There will be a cooking-on-a-budget demonstration, using local ingredients and the group’s energy wardens will be available to advise people on how to save energy and money through small changes around the house.

These are all in line with Grŵp Cynefin’s new sustainability strategy. In addition to reducing emissions by 4% year-on-year and achieving net zero* by 2044, the strategy also aims to achieve the following:

  • Develop a retrofit scheme for their existing homes
  • Build new homes to a low or zero carbon standard
  • Develop their Energy Wardens scheme to assist and advise tenants on the journey to net zerok
  • Reduce fleet emissions by switching to low or no emission vehicles
  • Flexible working policy to cut staff miles and workplace emissions
  • Investing in carbon skills and literacy for staff and customers
  • Introduction of LED lights and smart meters
  • Seek to install renewable energy on-site in their offices and other operating sites

Mel Evans, Grŵp Cynefin’s Director of Innovation and Growth, said: “These are ambitious targets but ones we will push to achieve. It is vital that housing associations show commitment and example on the journey to de-carbonisation.

“What better place than the Urdd Eisteddfod, which is a celebration of the young generation and the future to make our pledge as a group?”

  • Manages more than 4100 rental housing units across seven counties in north Wales and north Powys
  • Is developing homes of all kinds in response to local needs: for families, single people, older people and vulnerable persons with support needs
  • In addition to the managed units, with loans or equity in more than 800 intermediate market housing for people who are unable to buy a suitable home on the open market.
