Chief Executive welcomes Welsh Government’s second homes report

The Chief Executive of a leading north Wales housing association has welcomed the Welsh Government’s second homes report, published today (Thursday 9 June 2022). Grŵp Cynefin will lead on the Welsh Government pilot which will be implemented in the Dwyfor area.

As part of the Government’s research into the second homes crisis, Shan Lloyd Williams, Chief Executive of Grŵp Cynefin, gave evidence to the Senedd’s Local Government and Housing Committee in March this year. The Welsh Government’s Second Homes Report, which makes recommendations on actions to deal with the second homes crisis in Wales, was published today.

Shan Lloyd Williams said: “Grŵp Cynefin is proud to have contributed to the Welsh Government’s inquiry into second homes, and in particular the recommendations of a report written by Dr Simon Brooks that informed the inquiry.”

Grŵp Cynefin is leading on the pilot scheme, which is relevant to the recommendations made in the Government report. Shan Lloyd Williams added:

“As part of the pilot scheme in the Dwyfor area, we are now looking forward to taking action and making a difference by working with communities and partners to tackle the issues influencing the local housing market that have led to the rural housing crisis.”

In the introduction to the report, John Griffiths MS, Chair of the Local Government and Housing Committee said: “Our inquiry has taken place in an evolving context, when the issue of second homes has been
more prominent than ever and the Welsh Government has announced a series of consultations and measures to assist affected communities, including a pilot scheme currently underway in Dwyfor.

“In this report we consider the recommendations made by Dr Simon Brooks in his report, Second homes: developing new policies in Wales, the Welsh Government’s response to the report and the opportunities presented by the pilot in Dwyfor to gain a better understanding of the impact any policy and legislative changes may have.”

Shan Lloyd Williams is available for interviews.
