Plug-in Solar Panels

Important: Plug-in solar panels are not currently allowed in Grŵp Cynefin homes

We know that many residents are looking for ways to reduce their energy bills and make their homes more sustainable. It’s always interesting to see new technology that can help all of us save energy and reduce our environmental impact.

However, for now, Grŵp Cynefin does not allow tenants to use plug-in or portable solar panel systems in their homes.

Why not?

Plug-in solar panels are still relatively new in the UK. There is limited independent evidence to make us 100% sure about their long-term safety and performance when used in your home, which has a domestic electrical system.

The safety of our residents and homes is always our priority. There are still some concerns about the potential risks associated with these products, including:

  • Electric shock.
  • Damage to a home’s electrical system.
  • Overloaded circuits or electrical faults.
  • Increased risk of fire.
  • Safety issues relating to cabling, adapters and equipment placement.

As your landlord, we have a responsibility to make sure that all the electrical systems remain safe and suitable for use.

What does this mean for you?

At this time:

  • Please do not connect plug-in or portable solar panels to your home’s electrical system.
  • This includes any solar panel designed to plug directly into a standard electrical socket.
  • These systems must not be installed or used.

Looking ahead

We will continue to monitor industry guidance, product standards and safety evidence as this technology develops.

If clear, independent evidence shows that these systems can be used safely and reliably in homes like ours, we will review our position in the future.

Thank you for your understanding and for helping us keep our homes safe for everyone. If you have any questions or would like advice on other ways to improve energy efficiency at home, please get in touch.
