Key appointments herald a new era for Grŵp Cynefin Monday 11 October 2021

As housing group, Grŵp Cynefin, looks back on an unusually challenging year with the publication of its annual report and recent AGM, the group is also looking forward to a new and exciting period with key appointments and a brand new leadership team.

Key appointments herald a new era for Grŵp Cynefin

Grŵp Cynefin’s Chief Executive, Shan Lloyd Williams, sees the appointments as a step towards creating an innovative housing association that is a “catalyst for positive change.”

Grŵp Cynefin has two newly-appointed directors, both of whom have taken up their posts. Grŵp Cynefin’s new Director of Operations is Claire Shiland. Prior to this, Claire was an Inspector with North Wales Police and previously worked in housing in north Wales for 14 years.

Claire is now director of Grŵp Cynefin’s two subsidiaries, Care and Repair Conwy and Denbighshire and Canllaw, as well as strategic responsibility for the Gorwel business unit, which focuses on preventing homelessness and supporting victims of domestic violence, the Housing and Support Team, Cyswllt Cynefin customer service and the Assets Department.

Claire said: “Having spent three years out of the housing sector, it’s great to be back and I feel lucky to be joining Grŵp Cynefin at this exciting time. The housing and support sector continues to face many challenges and I look forward to working with the Grŵp Cynefin teams, our communities across north Wales and north Powys and key partners to make positive, lasting change.”

Grŵp Cynefin’s new Director of Innovation and Growth is Mel Evans. Mel was a Development Project Manager at Clwyd Alyn Housing Association and previously worked for Flintshire County Council, and before that Cymdeithas Tai Clwyd and Cymdeithas Tai Eryri. Mel will be director of the Development, Community Regeneration, Affordable Housing and business transformation departments.

Mel said: “I’m delighted at this exciting opportunity to join Grŵp Cynefin and contribute to the positive work we are doing to support our communities across north Wales.”

Bryn Ellis remains Group Director of Resources, responsible for Governance and Compliance, Health and Safety, Human Resources and Finance departments. Bryn has also been appointed Company Secretary.

The three, along with Shan Lloyd Williams, Grŵp Cynefin’s Chief Executive, now form the group’s brand new Leadership Team.

Shan Lloyd Williams said: “It’s a new and exciting time in the history of Grŵp Cynefin and this new Leadership Team is already up and running. It is key that we lead the work of the group in an innovative, dynamic and energetic way. At the forefront of the agenda is responding to the demand for more affordable housing, the challenges of decarbonisation and future social and financial challenges.

“It’s also an exciting time for new working practices as we transform the way our workforce works for the future. We are in the process of consulting with our staff about innovative working patterns that respond to good practices adopted during the Covid pandemic, in order to offer our staff important work-life balance. We will also lobby the Welsh Government for solutions to the rural housing crisis and seek to minimise the effects on the Welsh language, our culture and our communities.

“I want Grŵp Cynefin to be a catalyst for positive change, supporting improvements to the health and wellbeing of our communities, creating life-changing opportunities and shaping those places that underpin a sustainable future.”
