Highlight of Grŵp Cynefin's Older People's Day 2019

Best job ever - working with older tenants at Grŵp Cynefin

What was the highlight of Grŵp Cynefin’s People’s Tenants Day 2019?

• “Meeting old friends.”

• “The whole atmosphere and environment of the day.”

• “I’ve enjoyed all of it, roll on next year!”

• “A day out and meeting people I wouldn’t usually come across.”

• “Having the children here to sing, it’s lovely to hear the children taking part.”

• “The dementia film was very useful, as I have just been diagnosed with early dementia.”

• “Meeting Grŵp Cynefin staff.”

After all the organising, preparing and running around like headless chickens - there is no better praise or reward to us as staff members, seeing such a positive response in our older tenants’ questionnaires. It makes all the hard work and effort, worth every minute!

With nearly 60 older tenants taking part in our annual day, which is especially arranged for them, the Kinmel Manor Hotel, Abergele was ready for us. Tenants arrived from Bala, Ruthin, Holyhead and Porthmadog, the four towns that are home to our Extra Care schemes, in addition to our tenants who live independently in flats and houses in other north Wales or Powys towns.

‘Arts’ was the theme of the day, and tenants were given an opportunity to sample four workshops, one focusing on craft work; flower display; mindfulness and a creative drama workshop. Of course, the day started with a short presentation by our Chief Executive, Shan Lloyd Williams before everyone began to take part in the varied sessions. I had a personal insight into the mindfulness session, and I soon learnt some tips and advice about how to keep the mind and soul healthy!

Guest speaker of the day was Theatr Clwyd’s Director of Creative Engagement, Gwennan Mair, originally from Blaenau Ffestiniog. She shared with us some interesting facts about the work Theatr Clwyd does and offers to older people, including theatre work specifically for people dealing with dementia. The focus of the presentation concentrated on the opportunities that are available for older people to participate within the theatre. During the autumn, we will be working with Theatr Clwyd to offer drama sessions at Hwb Dinbych as part of our new ‘Social Prescription’ scheme. Look out for more details nearer the time on our website!

There was an opportunity after a wonderful lunch for everyone to explore the stalls that had attended the event and to gather information from TPAS Cymru (a tenant participation organisation), Versus Arthritis, Action on Hearing Loss, Betsi Cadwaladr Health Board and Age Cymru.

And the icing on the cake during the day was a visit from Ysgol Pen Barras school children who came over to perform with the older adults. Talk about singing - seeing the joy on tenants and children’s faces alike was pure gold! Fun and happiness - at times like this, I have the best job in the world! Talk about job satisfaction! Thank you all for making Grŵp Cynefin’s Older Tenants Day 2019 a wonderful event, yet again!
